Certain classes of images find disparate use amongst members of the ITK community for such purposes as visualization, simulation, testing, etc. Currently there exists two derived classes from the ImageSource class used for generating specific images for various applications, viz. RandomImageSource and GaussianImageSource. We propose to add to this set with the class GridImageSource which, obviously enough, produces a grid image. Such images are useful for visualizing deformation when used in conjunction with the WarpImageFilter, simulating magnetic resonance tagging images, or creating optical illusions with which to amaze your friends.

Summary:

This contribution is a simple and self contained class that allows the generation of controllable grids.  The class is a good utility class for visualizing transforms, particularly deformable transforms, and should also be useful when combined  with other images under image fusion regimes.

Hypothesis:

ITK-like filters can be used to provided a grid image in multiple dimensions.

Evidence:

The code appears to work as dscribed supporting the hypothesis.

Open Science:

Yes, with the exception of the ImageCompare utility they use to verify the output against the expected output.

Reproducibility:

DOwnloaded, compiled and ran the code and tests under Windows Vista, VS9.  The only problem I had was that the ImageCompare utility did not exist on my platform.  I used the InsightApplications ImageCompareTests executbale from ConvertBetweenFileFormats to manually verify the output vs. expected.  I also viewed the output images manually.

It would make it easier to verify this work if the comparison routines were included, but that is not critical.

Quality of the data :

Data for generation is created internally in the test.  The test applications are clear and easy to understand.
